10 Facts about recycling.

  1. On average over 2000kg of waste is generated by every person in Australia every year.
  2. 250,000 tons of plastic is afloat at sea.
  3. The triangle symbol on plastic does not mean it is recyclable. It is important to check with your council what types are safe to put in the recycling.
  4. 40% of waste is food and could be recycled.
  5. Even if your food scraps are compostible they do not go in the green bin.
  6. Food in landfill biodegrades and releases methane which harms the environment.
  7. It may take up to 1000 years for a plastic bag to decompose.
  8. Items such as: paint, chemicals, car parts, tyres, building materials, green waste and e-waste do not belong in any bin but some can be collected on cleanup days.
  9. Only clean cardboard and paper goes in the blue bin.
  10. Batteries can be disposed of in the specially labelled bin at the Civic Centre, Mosman.
